Piloti is known for its innovative and classic designs in producing a line of shoes, ranging from race performance to lifestyle. What some people do not know is the other work that Piloti’s lead designer, Michael Craven, has done for other companies. The most recent that hit home to our Piloti hearts and overall motorsports world is Michael’s work in helping design the new Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion logo.The Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion (once the Monterey Historic Automobile Races) has been held at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca for the past 37 years.
With the dawn of a new era for this amazing event it was time to give the event a new face and that always starts with the event logo. In the midst of creating something new, Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca approached Piloti to assist in providing creative design insight. What came from Michael was not just insight, but rather an iconic feel, putting the event in a historical new direction.
We got a chance to steal Michael away from his design duties to discuss his part in the Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunion logo and this is what we got:
Q: What was the reason for the inclusion of the blue curbing? Where did the idea come from?
MC: It came directly from my favorite place: the Corkscrew.
Q: What is the relevance of the curbing and the importance of what was once the Monterey Historic Automobile Races and now is the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion logo?
MC: For me there is no better place to watch a race than under the oak trees: it’s iconic.
Although a brief conversation with Michael before he had to get back to his duties, his last response said it all, “it’s iconic”.
